Visceral mobilization
Visceral treatment focuses on the manual examination and mobilization of the connective tissue of the internal organs and the related connective-tissue attachments (ligaments, peritoneum). Since the internal organs are in a close anatomical and nervous-system relationship with the musculoskeletal system, the condition of the visceral system fundamentally determines the dynamics of musculoskeletal and scar-related pain.
Through regulation of the nervous system, visceral treatment intervenes in rehabilitation via the following mechanisms:
Viscero-somatic reflexes and unloading the central nervous system: Chronic visceral pain input coming from internal organs (for example, from a liver or intestinal segment adhered due to a surgical scar) continuously bombards the spinal cord. This reflex pathway causes spasm, postural dysfunction, and referred pain in the skeletal muscles associated with the corresponding spinal segment. Visceral treatment releases this internal tension, thereby eliminating the “overload” of spinal cord neurons.
Biomechanical release of scars and fascial chains: Scars after abdominal or pelvic surgeries not only tether the skin surface, but are also in direct continuity with the coverings of the viscera. Visceral therapy restores the freedom of movement of the organs relative to each other and to the skeletal system, eliminating mechanical tensions that pull on nerves and blood vessels.
Balancing the autonomic nervous system: The internal organs have a rich autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic) neural network. Releasing visceral tension directly reduces the body’s stress response and supports parasympathetic function via the vagus nerve.
The use of visceral treatment is especially important in cases of musculoskeletal complaints and pain, because the body treats the internal support system as a unified whole:
Breaking compensatory chains: If an internal organ cannot move freely with breathing due to scarring or inflammation, the body is forced to protect itself by rotating and compensating through the spine and pelvis. Visceral treatment eliminates this hidden musculoskeletal constraint, restoring central stability.
Improving tissue microcirculation and fluid flow: Visceral tensions compress the vessels and lymphatics of the organs and surrounding fascia. In areas freed by treatment, adequate nutrient and oxygen supply resumes, which is essential for chronic inflammation and the biological remodeling of scar tissue.
Fine-tuning proprioceptive and body-map feedback: Incorrect or incomplete position-sense signals (proprioception) coming from the viscera mislead the brain about trunk stability. Visceral therapy sends back clear, harmonious sensory information to the central nervous system, helping build stable, pain-free movement patterns.
Raising local and global pain thresholds: By eliminating tension in the internal organs, the body’s overall inflammatory load and sympathetic nervous system readiness decrease, which raises the pain threshold throughout the entire musculoskeletal system.
